Conservatives Jumping the Campaign Gun
This has been reported already(and here), but it hasn’t seemed to gain a lot of attention. I just received another two flyers yesterday from the Conservative party. The flyers each describe some hot button issue such as crime or drugs or defence that the Conservatives feel they have an advantage on. It also includes a mock election ballot form with the Liberal, Conservative, NDP and Green party leader names and pictures. It looks like a real ballot.
They want us to send them back and let them know who we think should lead.
I have a few problems with this. Campaign advertising is fine. But the campagin hasn’t started yet! That means the conservatives are using other government funds to pay for what is obviously election campaigning. No wonder they are being investigated about campaign funding issues.
Another problem is that their message is very misleading and shows the same strategy that they always follow, smear the liberals as ineffectual and try to strengthen their oponents while complaining the conservatives don’t get a fair consideration by the media. That about sums up their campaign I’d say.
We’ll see if it works. Looks like Sunday will be the starting bell. Hopefully these flyers can just be added on to the list of investigations if they ever get started again.
Update: Well it looks as if Election Canada would disagree with me, apparently it is ok to campaign before thee election starts. Thats dissapointing, and its one of those things that should be changed. But they did point out that all the spending must come from campaign budget. In Harper’s case, it represents some strong hypocrisy, for someone who wanted to have fixed election dates to remove power from the Prime Minister’s hands. He not only called the election early, breaking his own law, he began campaigning early to fully take advantage of his foreknowledge.
