Protect the trees
Rob Ford wants to see 5-cent bag fee abolished because :
“I believe the taxpayers don’t want to pay the five cents any more. It is actually six cents with the HST.” – Toronto Mayor Rob Ford
Really? Is that a good enough reason? What about the disincentive to waste plastic? People want to do the right thing and bring their own bags but just a small charge like this is the motivation that makes all the difference. Trying to get businesses to donate that fund to maintain Toronto’s tree canopy seems like a great idea. As a Torontonian in exile one of my favourite things about the city whenever I’m back is all the trees. Viewed from above the city is a sea of treetops which belies the common view outside the city that it is a soul-less concrete jungle.
My advice, just ignore the Mayor, that seems to becoming a trend, and it’s a good one.
